How does the ointment work and what does it consist of

The therapeutic effect of the drug is as follows:

  • anti-inflammatory effect in fungal, microbial and other infections;
  • reduction of pain and simply uncomfortable sensations;
  • antiseptic effect;
  • keratoplastic effect, that is, drying of the tissue, stopping decay; restoration of microcirculation of all processes, regeneration and healing.

This effect of the drug is provided by its composition, which includes only two components – ichthammol, which is a directly active healing substance and petroleum jelly, as a filling base. Just the case when the simplicity of the composition of the drug is extremely effective.

Pharmacology offers two types of ointment – 10 g and 20 g of the active substance per hundred grams of the drug. Ichthammol itself is a derivative of sulfur shale, which explains the characteristic smell of the medicine.

Ichthyol ointment combines anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and analgesic effects on the disease. When applied to the skin at the site of the disease, the medicine:

  • destroys the causative agent of the disease;
  • localizes and relieves inflammation;
  • reduces the formation of pus and the production of lymphatic fluid;
  • penetrates into the bloodstream, but only locally, due to which it regenerates tissue in the focus of the disease.

When prescribing ichthyol ointment in other medical fields, it is injected into the rectum, into the vagina, into the urethra. The drug significantly accelerates the treatment of many diseases in the pelvic organs, and with the start of the industrial production of the drug in the form of suppositories, established by pharmacists, this use of ichthyol has become much easier.

Also, the ointment is widely used in veterinary medicine, in its composition it differs only in the filler – instead of vaseline, viseptol was used, all other characteristics are identical to the human version of the drug.

How it interacts with other drugs

Not all drugs are compatible with each other, and ichthyol ointment is no exception.

The drug is not combined with substances such as:

  • solutions of iodine salts;
  • alkaloids;
  • heavy metal salts;
  • zinc oxide.

That is, it is impossible to combine the use of ichthyol with drugs containing these substances.

Enhance the action of ichthammol and its systemic absorption, that is, the depth of penetration of the substance into soft tissues, substances such as:

  • dimethyl sulfoxide;
  • ethanol;
  • glycerol.

With simultaneous application with ichthyol, these substances will enhance the effect of the drug at times, depending on individual susceptibility.

How to apply ichthyol ointment

With indirect appointments, for example, in the treatment of diseases of organs inside the small pelvis, a tissue or cotton swab inserted into the intestine or vagina is impregnated with ointment. Fortunately, with the advent of ichthyol candles on sale, the need for this has disappeared.

For external use, for which this medicine was created, the ointment is applied in a thin layer to an unhealthy area of \u200b\u200bthe skin. When applying the medicine, it is important to capture not only the focus of inflammation, but go beyond it, lubricating healthy skin as well. This is necessary because the activity of the infection and the degree of its spread do not always correspond to the picture visible to the eyes.

As for the thickness of the ichthyol layer, it is considered sufficient to have a thickness at which the skin does not shine through. If necessary, or just for convenience, the affected area can be covered with gauze or just a cloth or a bandage.

The order of application of the medicine:

  • two to four times a day;
  • within two to three weeks.

When using gauze bandages, you need to do this:

  • change the bandage with regularity at 8-9 hours;
  • wash with soap and gently dry the affected skin area;
  • apply a new layer of ointment only under a fresh and clean bandage.

The usual course of treatment for skin inflammations and infections is 20 days, but the duration is still individual, and can be both shorter and longer.

When using ichthyol against neuralgia and arthritis, the ointment is applied in a thin layer to the skin over the focus of the disease, for greater patient comfort, you can cover the application site with a gauze cloth. You need to apply the medicine a couple of times a day.

When using this medicine against acne, only the pimple itself is lubricated, completely, but pointwise. It is not necessary to distribute the ointment all over the face, like a cream.

When using the ointment, as with any topical sulfur-based preparation, simple precautions must be observed:

  • after applying the medicine, you should immediately wash your hands thoroughly with soap;
  • do not allow the product to get on the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth, if this still happened, immediately rinse with running cool water;
  • avoid contact with the ointment of small children who can use it for play;
  • lactating women should be especially careful to ensure that the ointment does not fall on those parts of the body with which the baby is in contact.
