Oxygen cocktail: benefits and harms, a recipe for home

The most common and important chemical element on our planet is oxygen. It is present in air, soil, water and all living organisms. Life without it is not possible. Having discovered this element for the first time, J. Priestley suggested that oxygen would be of great importance in medical science.

The predictions of the English scientist came true. Specialists use this gas in the treatment of many diseases (heart, lung, gangrene, ulcers, hypoxia, etc.), including the preparation of health cocktails, which are called oxygen.

Who invented the oxygen cocktail?

The discovery of a drink enriched with oxygen belongs to the famous scientist of the last century, Nikolai Nikolaevich Sirotinin. In the first half of the 1960s, the pathophysiologist Sirotinin worked on studying the direct effect of oxygen on the human gastrointestinal tract.

Initially, the academician introduced gas into the stomachs of patients through a tube, the procedure was not very pleasant, but very effective. Therefore, it was decided to use oxygen foam, which a person could simply swallow. In the course of the research, a beneficial effect of oxygen on the subjects was noted: the body was saturated with oxygen, making up for its deficiency, ulcers healed faster on the gastric mucosa, and the general condition of the patients became much better.

Immediately after the invention of the drink, called the “oxygen cocktail”, in 1963 it began to be served in many Soviet institutions of the medical and preventive type. However, due to the inconvenience of using the forty liter gas cylinders needed to create foam, the popularity of this method of oxygen therapy has faded. And only since 1995, the active use of cocktails in schools, kindergartens and sanatoriums began again.

The appearance of the drink is very attractive – a colored liquid with a large foam cap on top. Main Ingredients:

  • oxygen (food additive E948, approved by the International Health Organization),
  • the base that gives the drink a taste (juices without pulp, milk, water, syrups, herbal tinctures),
  • foaming agent (natural – egg white, licorice root, etc. or synthetic).


Taste qualities are completely dependent on the second component, the choice of which is very wide, so everyone can choose nectar based on their preferences.

According to the recommendations of medical specialists, the drink should be taken one and a half hours before or two hours after a meal. The course of oxygen therapy usually lasts 10 days, 1-2 cocktails per day.

Treatment and rehabilitation through oxygen cocktails is carried out during pregnancy, prescribed for children, athletes and people suffering from various diseases (hypoxia, immunodeficiency, disruption of the heart, blood vessels, etc.).

This is a low-calorie treat (only 333 kcal), its energy value: proteins – 0.8 g (~ 3 kcal), carbohydrates: 87 g (~ 348 kcal).

A device for creating foam can be an oxygen mixer, a cocktail or a tube with an aerator. A spray bottle, a bottle with a reducer or a concentrator will help to enrich the liquid base with oxygen. The best choice when creating a fizzy treat on your own would be a small oxygen canister (several liters) and a tube with an aerator.

Fill the bowl of the device with the base for the cocktail. Add a foaming agent in a ratio of 1:10 and mix thoroughly. Let off the gas. Prepare glasses and fill them with prepared bubbling drink. By itself, the oxygen used to create an air drink is not combustible. It complies with GOST 5583-78. However, this gas is capable of intensifying combustion, its contact with any oil or fat leads to the ignition of the latter. A small spark is enough here, and with a lot of pressure, fire can appear without it.
